ME305 by age fresh for lact 1

This chart shows the average 305ME by age of calving for first lactation heifers.  Animals calving too early and too late are usually lower, but depending on the numbers of animal, genetic variation can make this difficult to see.  Late calvings have small numbers and cause the average to fluctuate wildly.

ME305 by days dry and lactation

Scatterplot of the 305ME by days dry in the last dry period.  These are separated into lactation group 2 and 3.  Also look at the frequency of short and long dry periods.  Short dry periods don’t provide sufficient time for mammary involution and typically you will see milk production drop when the dry period is less than 45 days for lact 3+ and 50 days for lact 2 cows.

            Reproduction Reports

            Report Name

            Description

What is the Service Rate, Preg Rate, PregLoss Rate?

At this report, you can change the date ranges to run the report, make tables or charts, and change the lactation groups the report is being run for.  The abort min option is the setting for if aborts should be included in the report.  Thirty-five is a good number, but can be changed to anything desired.  When the report is set to 35, any abort that occurs before 35 days is considered open and after it is considered pregnant and an abort.  If you would like to read on the differences in preg rate calculation, just ask us to send you the whitepaper on improvements BoviSync has made over traditional methods developed for heat only breeding.

Rail Preg Percent over last 60 days

Table of the percent of first preg checks that were found pregnant over the past 2 months.  The rail preg percent is different than conception rate, because heat bred animals, bred before a preg check will not show up on the rail preg percent, but will on the conception rate reports.

What is the Stated Voluntary Waiting Period (VWP)?

            What is the programmed VWP?

Table of the average DIM for the VWP and the settings page where the VWP is set by lactation group.

DIM at First Breeding by Fresh Date

Scatterplot of number of animals bred by DIM and fresh date.  Look for changes over the past year and ensure that animals are not being bred to early or late for your breeding protocols.

            Age at first breeding

Scatterplot of the age at first breeding over the past year for heifers.  Look for both consistency in the target breeding range and for outlier that are first bred to young or old.  Click on outliers to see the animal and identify the problem with that animal.

            Age at first calving

Histogram of the age at calving for animals by age in months.  Look for the largest number just before your target calving date and very few that are calving more than 4 months after your target calving date.  This is a trailing indicator of heifer breeding performance and an indicator of expected cow value.  Cows that calve to early or late have dramatically lower milk production.

What is the conception rate to standing heat?

            Conception Rate by breeding reason.

Conception rate by reason for breeding to the 1st breeding for the past year

Find the reproductive protocols used for first service and their efficacy.  Keep in mind that alternative to the primary protocol are often used on cows that appeared to have issues and needed intervention for the first service.

Conception rate by reason for breeding to the repeat breedings for the past year

Find the reproductive protocols used for second and later services and their efficacy.

Are there significant technician related conception failures?

The conception rate by technician for 4 months ago until 35 days ago gives a recent conception rate by technician.  Consider the total number of breedings when looking at this table so you are only comparing people with sufficiently high number of breedings.

Conception rate by month for the past year

This report shows the conception rate overall for cows for the past year.  Here you can look for seasonal declines in conception rate as well as recent changes and compare to the past year overall.  You may want to add filters for lactation group or reason for breeding or other metrics to drill down further into the results.

Breeding summary and conception rates by a range of methods to break down breedings.  A few tips for using the reports, change the aggregation method to change what you are doing your analysis by.  You may want to add filters to drill down further, maybe remove synchronized breedings from the conception rate by hours since heat table.  Finally, when making smaller date ranges a few suggestions.  Set the report end date on a preg check day, and then set the Date to be less than or equal to the number of days you first preg check at.  Set the first day to the date you want your analysis to start.  This will remove all the breedings that have not been checked from the analysis, if you don’t do this, animals rebred off heat will show as open and drag down the conception rate.

            ECM and LSCC by testday

Chart of ECM (energy correct milk) and LSCC averages over the past year.  This chart combines all lactations and doesn’t separate lactation groups.  It is a good overall trend in the amount of lactational energy output for the herd and LSCC.

LSCC by Testday and Lactation Group

The average LSCC by testday and lactation group.  We use LSCC because it allows for averages of biological significance.  Look for differences recently and if there are differences in lactation groups that seem significant on your farm.  Try adding filters for particular lactations and stages of lactation for curves that appear to be a problem.

            LSCC by Testdate and Farm

The average LSCC by test date and farm over the past year

What is the rate of new infection, chronic, cure, and not infected for the last DHIA test?

This table has 4 quadrants that mean different things.  The top left (SCC and PSCC less than 200) is the rate of uninfected animals.  The top right (SCC>200 and LSCC<200) is the rate of new infections.  The bottom left (PSCC>200 and SCC<200) is the rate of cures.  And finally the bottom right (PSCC>200 and SCC>200) is the rate of chronic infections.  Try filters for lactation number of stage of lactation to better understand different demographics.

What is the dry period cure rate?

This table is the same as the new, chronic, cure, and not infected table above, but the values are for dry SCC and first test SCC.  So the new infection (1st SCC>200 and Dry SCC<200) is the rate of new infections over dry off and the opposite quadrant (DrySCC>200 and 1st SCC<200) is the number of DHIA mastitis cures.

New Infection rate (DHIA SCC test) by pen over the past year

The new infection rate chart shows animals that have a test above 200 SCC and not last test.  It can be used to identify lactation groups, stages of lactation, and pens that may be associated with high amounts of new mastitis infections.

What is the rate and trend for first test new infection rate (DHIA SCC test) by lactation group?

The new infection rates here for first test indicate if animals by lactation group are starting their lactation with mastitis.  If the levels are high, you want to review your dry protocol and pre-fresh procedures.

Chronic Mastitis (DHIA SCC Test) by Date and Lactation Group

The chronic infection rate (DHIA) chart shows animals that have the last and previous milk test above 200 SCC.  It can be used to identify lactation groups, stages of lactation, and pens that may be associated with high amounts of new mastitis infections.

Annual average chronic mastitis risk by DIM and Lactation Group (DHIA SCC test)

Chart of DHIA chronic mastitis (2+ consecutive tests that are SCC>200) by lactation group over the course of a lactation.  This rate typically increases over a lactation, look for high values or big changes at some point in a lactation.  Increasing lactations should be higher than lower lactations.  As you get to the end of the lactation, the numbers bounce around because there are fewer animals as many are dried up by this point.

Annual Average New Infection Risk by DIM and Lactation Group (DHIA SCC test)

Chart of DHIA new mastitis (this SCC test was greater than 200 and the previous was below) by lactation group.  Increasing lactations should be higher than lower lactations. As you get to the end of the lactation, the numbers bounce around because there are fewer animals as many are dried up by this point.

Annual Average Cure Rate by DIM and Lactation Group (DHIA SCC test)

Chart of DHIA mastitis cures (SCC for this test was lower than 200 and the previous test was above 200).  The earliest lactation values for lact>1 represent the dry period cure, and are generally the highest.

Chart of the percent of DHIA milk tests with fat test lower than protein test (fat inversion) over the past year.  This number should be low and look for trends or high values that may indicate issues with the ration and feeding.  Acute acidosis is often a cause of fat inversion.
