Insights Reporting for Time Ranges of Animals

Insights Reporting for Time Ranges of Animals

Summary of BoviSync Insights Reporting with Time Ranges of Animals:

BoviSync Insights reporting allows you to run reports on any day in the past and accurately represent both the animals at the dairy, as well as the status of the animals on that day (Pen, DIM, repro, etc).  To ensure that the correct animals are represented on each day - BoviSync has rules for "Start" and "Stop" events.  This knowledge base article will walk you through the rules so you can better understand what the reports represent and the rules that are applied to those events.

Start Event Types:

Birth, Purchase, and Move off farm event types are the "Start" event types.  These three event types cause an animal to start at a location.

Stop Event Types:

Sold/Cull and Move off farm event types are the "Stop" event types.  These event types will be the last day the animals are available at a particular location.

Insights Animal Reporting
When a date range is selected - if an animal is on the farm in that date range (based on the "Start" and "Stop" events) it will be included in that report.  If an animal moves from Farm A to Farm B on July 4th - then the Insights report for both Farm A and Farm B will include the animal if the date range includes July 4th.  Because there is only a single animal record - if you are logged into both Farm A and Farm B - you will only see the one animal record (because there is only one).  The location being at both farms on July 4th permit the animal to be included in both farm's reports.

Insights Event Reporting
Events that occur before the animal's purchase date will show a location of "BoviSync Transfer Farm".  This allows you to include or exclude events that occured on the animal before arriving at your farm in Event reports.

Rules for specific Event Types:

Fully adopted on Sept 24, 2025

Birth

  1. Animals are only allowed 1 birth event for their lifetime
  2. Animals that have their Date of Birth edited - will result in updating the birth event date
  3. Birth Date Update Import Coming Soon!

Purchased Event

  1. Animals are only allowed 1 purchase event for their lifetime
  2. If an animal has an existing Purchased Event, adding a new Purchased Event will always result in the existing Purchased Event to become updated with new values.
  3. The purchase date will always be after the birth event.  If a purchase date before the birth event is entered/imported - it will default to seconds after the birth event.
  4. For easy editing of Sold Events - use the Insights 'edit' feature to edit events in bulk - or - use the purchase event import
  5. Editing an animal's origin to Purchase will result in a purchase event on the birth date.
  6. Animals imported without a purchase date, but a purchase origin will have a purchase event on the same day as their dob.

Move off Farm

  1. Move off Farm events must be after the birth event (entry before will automatically be moved to after the birth event)
  2. Move off Farm events that are entered in sequence to the same farm - will result in the later one being deleted as the animal is already at that farm.
  3. Events into the future are not allowed, future events are saved as the current time
Sold Cull

  1. Only allowed 1 event per lifetime
  2. Never allowed to be before Birth Date
  3. Additional Sold Events entered will update the existing sold event
  4. For easy editing of Sold Events - use the Insights 'edit' feature to edit events in bulk
  5. If animal has Sold Cull (Died) within 24 hours of Birth Date, animal is automatically declared "Died in 24 hours" origin.   Note:  Stillborn & Died in 24 Hours origin animals are not available in Animal reports.

General Rule for all Location Start/Stop Event Types

  1. All event types that are start/stop event types are not allowed to be at the exact same time.  Doing that causes indeterminant location (e.g.  you can't have two move off farm events to different farms at the same time - which one is the actual event to use?).   Logic has been added that when this occurs (usually from protocols with auto-events) the timestamps are automatically adjusted by up to a few seconds to make one after the other. Users desiring greater control of the ordering when the logic doesn't automatically work they way they expected can use the event time to define the time.
  2. Many event types are restricted from entering into the future by more than 7 days, some like move off farm events are not allowed into the future

Change Ownership

  1. This event type is intended for changing ownership of an animal between multi-site dairies, which are connected to the same Billing Account.
  2. If you are wanting to sell an animal to another producer that uses BoviSync, you must enter a "Sold Cull" event type and use one of the transfer record options.

FAQ

Q:  Why were these changes made?
A:   These rules enable reporting to work as user expect and for much easier, cleaner entry.  There is a lot of logic that has been added so that when you make a change, the other changes 'just automically happen'.   For instance, if you edit the animal's dob - the birth event move with that change automatically.  This ensures reporting is accurate and doesn't have exceptions for odd or complex entry.

Q:  How does this affect my herd?
A:  When these rules were implemented, entry that was non-sensical or indeterminant (e.g.  sold events before birth dates, birth events on days that were the animal's dob, purchased animal missing purchased events, move off farm events at the same time, etc)  gets automatically corrected as animals records are saved.  In some cases, this could result in reports being slightly different, primarily for historic reporting, and in rare cases for current reporting (occurs from indeterminant entry correction).

Q:  My heifer raiser wants to keep one of my animals.  How do I record this?
A:   Request the animal be moved off farm back to it's home farm.   Then enter a "Sold Cull" event for "Sold for Dairy" or "Sold to Finisher"  then record the destination farm and limited or full history.
