Power BI Template

Power BI Template

Power BI is a powerful business intelligence (BI) tool developed by Microsoft. It transforms raw data into meaningful insights through interactive visualizations and reports. BoviSync has developed Power BI templates for accessing the BoviSync Performance Data Link in the Snowflake Marketplace. The Power BI templates are meant to get developers a head start with context and relationships of the data available in the BoviSync Performance Datalink. Enhancements are provided to showcase different features and patterns in Power BI. Unconditional permission is provided to users of these templates to modify, change, and utilize for their own intended purposes.

Prerequisites

  1. BoviSync Team
  2. Snowflake Account
  3. Permission Grant to teams from farms
  4. Power BI Desktop
  5. Power BI Pro (recommended)

Instructions

Download and Install Power BI Desktop
Open the template
Fill out parameters (must match Snowflake info):
      Snowflake Role:  SYSADMIN
      Warehouse:  COMPUTE_WH
      Database: BOVISYNC_PERFORMANCE_DATA_LINK
      Server: company-account.snowflakecomputing.com
Authenticate to Snowflake

Info
Several options exist for secure authentication to Snowflake from Power BI. Snowflake accounts are encouraged to setup SSO. For more information: Power BI SSO to Snowflake | Snowflake Documentation

The Power BI templates will load data through the Snowflake Account with the correct parameters and successful authentication. If there is an error review the parameters including access by role and the users access to that role.

Filtering data is recommended to reduce the size, speed, and cost of queries. Data queries may be filtered directly in Power Query to exclude extra columns, dates, et cetera.

Power BI Desktop is all that is needed to access the template. However, the best experience for users will be in the Power BI service.
